If your firm is running MicroStation V8i with InRoads or Geopak, the Windows 10 end-of-life deadline isn’t just an IT problem, it’s a design software problem. Upgrading the OS and upgrading your road design platform aren’t two separate decisions. They’re one and the same.
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. No more security patches, no more bug fixes. For engineering firms managing infrastructure projects and sensitive client data, running an unsupported OS isn’t an option. Your IT department’s Windows 11 mandate is either already here or on its way.
Why V8i Won’t Run Reliably on Windows 11
Bentley has not certified MicroStation V8i for Windows 11 and has no plans to do so. The platform was designed for Windows 7 and Windows 10 environments. It relies on legacy 32-bit components, older runtime libraries, and DirectX rendering layers that Windows 11 handles differently.
InRoads and Geopak compound these problems. Their deep stack of interdependent components (style files, GPK databases, drainage solvers) were never designed with Windows 11 in mind. Unfortunately, even if the V8i installations appear to run on Windows 11, problems are likely waiting to surface at the worst possible moment, and when they do, Bentley won’t be there to diagnose them. V8i is unsupported, and that’s final.
OpenRoads Designer: The Windows 11-Ready Upgrade
OpenRoads Designer (ORD), built on Bentley’s CONNECT Edition platform, is fully certified for Windows 11 and receives regular compatibility updates. More importantly, it’s a genuine generational upgrade., not just a compatibility patch.
Survey data, geometry, corridor modeling, drainage, cross sections, and sheet production all live in one unified environment. Changes to horizontal geometry or vertical profiles propagate automatically through everything, from the corridor model to the plan sheets and every step along the way. Tasks that used to require juggling InRoads, Geopak, and MicroStation separately now flow through a single application.
How to Plan Your MicroStation V8i to ORD Migration
The most common mistake is treating this as a software swap rather than a workflow change. A few things to get right:
- Data migration: DGN files carry over, but InRoads style files and Geopak GPK databases need conversion or recreation. Bentley’s migration utilities help but aren’t always plug-and-play.
- Training: Budgeting dedicated time before putting ORD on live projects can be the difference between a successful project and budget overruns and missed deadlines. CAD Journey’s Learning Paths and Bentley Communities are good starting points.
- Phased rollout: Many firms keep V8i available for ongoing projects while starting new projects in ORD, reducing disruption without indefinitely delaying the transition.
- DOT coordination: If you work on federally funded projects, get your state DOT’s ORD workspace and standards files in hand before you start.
The status quo isn’t sustainable, but the firms that plan proactively will come out ahead. The double upgrade is coming whether you’re ready or not. The only question is whether it happens on your schedule or the calendar’s.
